#120: Watch Gattaca

I’ve always been fascinated with genetics, from filling in my very first Punnett square to reading about stem cell research.  But it also terrifies me–the possibilities that I’m not sure should be put into human hands, the capabilities that we aren’t so sure what to do with.  I’m all for scientific progress, but the idea that one day real life may mirror Minority Report or I, Robot makes me wish I lived a century ago.

So when I read this article about the possible commercialization of fetal DNA tests, on the one hand, I was fascinated that this sort of test may become commonplace.  I was also terrified.  And then I felt I just had to watch Gattaca. Read the rest of this entry »

#119: Buy an $8 dress

It may not have been quite as good of a deal as the $2 tank top I bought a few months ago, but it’s an even greater accomplishment because dresses have less chance of fitting me correctly.  (I don’t fit into traditional sizes because I have the chest of a 12 year old, the hips of a 20 year old, the arms of a monkey, and the height of a man.)

So when I tried on a special dress on sale for $8 at Old Navy (what, did you think I scored an $8 dress at Saks?), I had little hope it would actually fit.  Imagine my surprise when not only did it fit, but it fit decently. Read the rest of this entry »

#117: Poem in pocket

Yesterday was Poem In Your Pocket Day.  I don’t know exactly what that is, but the basic idea is you carry around a poem in your pocket, ostensibly to share with others throughout the day.

The first step of participating is to wear pants with pockets.  So for me, the first step was to put on actual pants. Read the rest of this entry »

#116: Get free money

If you grew up like I did, you didn’t get things handed to you.  You didn’t get an allowance, take family vacations, or receive $100 for your birthday every year from your grandma.  You worked for anything you got, and you never took anything for granted.  After college, as soon as you were in a position to save, you did, as much as possible, even though that often meant abstaining from spending money on truly necessary things like going out to bars and restaurants with your friends.

So you understand how surreal it would feel to suddenly get free money. Read the rest of this entry »

#115: Random thank you

Here is an excerpt from a poem I love:

Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some people move our souls to dance.
They awaken us to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom.
Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon.
They stay in our lives for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.

When you finally come up for air after choking on all that cheese, I’ll tell you what it has to do with anything. Read the rest of this entry »

#114: Eat chili

I ate chili for dinner yesterday.  That’s about all I have to say about that.
