#243: Use caffeine

My body reacts severely to caffeine–severely as in if I drink coffee or take Excedrin at any time during the day (even in the morning), I can’t sleep at night.  I’m not exaggerating; I will literally not sleep for the entire night.  I’ll be exhausted, but I won’t be able to fall asleep.  It’s awful.

Needless to say, I avoid caffeine as much as possible. Read the rest of this entry »

#242: See a MetroCard collage

If you’re in/near the East Village (or Laguna Beach starting in November), you should check this out because it’s pretty cool: MetroCard Collages.  It’s the kind of thing where you think, I could totally make that, but then you end up feeling okay about it because you know you never would have come up with it.

#241: See the Postal Police

Did you know the post office has police?  Did you think that could even be possible?  I sure didn’t.  But there it was, sneaking in after an ambulance had diverted traffic, a car with the words Postal Police on the back.

I can see why maybe the post office might need a small police force: for the one time the letter wasn’t just lost in the mail but in fact stolen; for the riot that breaks out when the line of 4 people hasn’t moved in a half hour.  I get it.  But don’t you think advertising the fact that you’re the Postal Police may not be the best idea?

You know, there’s that whole saying, “going postal”? Read the rest of this entry »

#240: Work at a nonprofit

I was never in it for the money.

I went to school to be a teacher, and then I worked in publishing for 5 years.  Clearly, if I were all about money, I would have chosen another profession. Read the rest of this entry »

#239: Watch I Found the Gown

This show on TLC is the budget-friendly Say Yes to the Dress.  Women who like a good deal go to this discount store to search for their dream dresses, and then they get really excited when they’re able to get designer gowns for a fraction of the price.

I support living vicariously through other women who are getting married.  For those of us who might never get the chance to go dress shopping for our own weddings (because we may not get married–was that clear?), it’s entertaining to see strangers find their perfect gowns and marry their perfect husbands in perfect ceremonies. It’s like escaping into a fantasy land where every little girl grows up to meet her match and wear the white dress.

#238: Handle a hot dog

I like eating hot dogs.  I do not like touching hot dogs.  For as long as I can remember, every time I’ve had to transfer a hot dog from its original package to the grill, pot of water, microwave (depending on how lazy I am that day), I’ve cringed.  There’s just something about the uncooked hot dog’s feel in my hands that is disgusting to me.  It probably has something to do with how even cooked hot dogs are pretty gross if you think about it, but when I have a cooked hot dog in a bun, I don’t think about it.

Anyway, for years I have suffered through the transfer of the hot dog. Read the rest of this entry »

#237: Yell at a stranger

I’m shy; I hate talking to strangers; I do not enjoy drawing attention to myself.  Using that information, determine which of the following I am least likely to do when a stranger intentionally hits me with his briefcase, pushing me dangerously close to falling off the subway platform:

a.) Ignore it and go about my day even though I am scared for my life.
b.) Smile at him to try to instill some sort of kindness into him since clearly he needs it if he’s going around pushing strangers.
c.) Push him back because he obviously deserves it.
d.) Shout (not actually loudly, but because I never even talk to strangers let alone yell at them, it seems loud to me), “What are you doing?!” Read the rest of this entry »
