#304: Win a haiku contest

This is pretty exciting: Someone on Twitter (can’t remember who or else I’d give the proper credit) linked to this computer-themed Frightful Haiku Contest, and, given that I love a challenge–and Halloween–I decided to enter.

Of course I didn’t think I’d actually win…not because I doubt my haiku skills, but simply because I don’t typically win contests and–okay, I doubt my haiku skills.

But guess what. Read the rest of this entry »

#303: Make a like list

Yesterday, left alone in my apartment during the hurricane, I was thinking about something someone recently said to me.  I don’t remember the exact wording, but it was along the lines of: “You know you don’t have to let people treat you badly,” or something that implied this person thought my self-esteem was so low that I’m at risk of being mistreated because I don’t love myself enough to stop it.

My initial reaction was, “Whoa.  My outward presentation of self-deprecation is clearly going way too far.”  But then I started thinking about it more. Read the rest of this entry »

#302: Buy emergency water

Overheard while walking home from the second-to-last subway to run in my neighborhood before transportation was suspended due to the impending hurricane: “I really wish I had a boyfriend right now.”

I didn’t have to hear the rest of the conversation to know exactly what the woman was talking about.  She was talking about how preparing for a storm (or suffering a setback, or solving a problem) doesn’t feel quite so serious with someone by your side. Read the rest of this entry »

#301: Wear a sexy Halloween costume

By sexy I mean, “showing more skin than I usually do with my Halloween costume, which for the past 5 years has been some variation of a bodysuit.”  I don’t mean I purposely tried to look sexy (which is good, because I would have failed).  I mean I had bare legs with a super short skirt that I normally never wear without tights.

It was a 90’s Halloween party, which for the most part inspired only fun nostalgia.  The sad, scary, “wow, I can’t believe all of this music was popular when I was in middle school” part was kept to a minimum.  Amazingly.

#300: Be a professional photographer

There are certain things you shouldn’t give me because I don’t know how to handle them: excessive compliments; a carving knife; professional photography equipment.

Yesterday, the girl who usually takes pictures for my company had a meeting during an event, and no one else was around, so I was the last resort.

“Here’s the camera.  Here’s how you turn it on.  Now you try it.” Read the rest of this entry »

#299: Midnight Circus

Guy walking by line of people: What are you in line for?

Me: A circus.

Guy: Inside there?

Me: Yeah.

Guy: Is it going to be really fun? Read the rest of this entry »

#298: Peanut Butter & Co.

I never had a desire to try flavored peanut butter.  But then, I also can’t think of anything peanut butter-related I would turn down.

Usually, these types of restaurants are too gimmicky to be truly enjoyable, other than as a one-time experience.  Some of them–like Rice to Riches–would probably do okay without the tourist factor, but most of them exist purely to satiate people’s odd predilection for bulk offerings of one type of food.
