#586: Topless trash take-out

You know how it is, right?

You’re doing the dishes while naked, and though you’ve been really good over the past week, for some reason scrubbing peanut butter from tupperware makes you tear up, and in between bites of chocolate in the shape of a snowflake left over from Christmas, you start thinking damaging thoughts that aren’t even concrete but you know they’re not good for you because they’re straying from the mantra your friend gave you to repeat about how you’d rather be alone than with someone who doesn’t treat you well?

#585: Learn the word licit

I know lots of things about the English language.  For example, I know that the prefix, “il” means “not.”

Yet somehow, when hearing about illicit things over the years, I never made the connection that there must also be the word, licit.  No one uses it!

#584: Eat Cincinnati chili

Cincinnati-style chili (famously from Skyline) is served on spaghetti.  A friend from Kentucky would always talk about the city’s chili, and its “cheese Coneys” (which are hot dogs with chili on them and as far as I know have nothing to do with Coney Island, though it seems weird that they wouldn’t, right?).  Though I’m not the biggest fan of chili in general, I always figured I’d one day try it, since I AM the biggest fan of pasta.

Last night I had my chance at Edward’s Cincinnati Night. Read the rest of this entry »

#583: Tandem

You know how often I go to Bushwick.  And yet, when I was there for LoftOpera this weekend, the person I went with happened to know the guy we happened to sit next to.  We were all introduced, I left early to go home and eat 10 peeps in one sitting (before you ask, yes, it was as awesome as it sounds), and that was that.

The next day, I returned to Bushwick and went to Tandem.  As I looked around for the group I was meeting, a guy waved at me.  It was the same guy from the night before.

#582: Just Two of Us

I first heard of this art installation funded by the Public Art Fund back in November, right after it had begun.  At the time, I decided to wait until the weather was nice to visit.

So, on the first 50-degree Saturday after weeks of deep freeze, I trekked downtown to Brooklyn to view the piece.  When I found my way to the plaza housing the exhibit, my heart fell.  Apparently, Just Two of Us is the perfect place to haul piles of snow. Read the rest of this entry »

#581: All-inclusive vacation

File under: things I always wanted to do once in my life even though I had a feeling they wouldn’t be that great.

Not that I’m complaining about going on a tropical vacation while NYC was still in the middle of the ridiculous winter it’s obsessed with this year, but I’ve learned that an all-inclusive resort, while seemingly a good idea, is not for me.

#580: Take a scuba lesson

“How did that feel?” the instructor asked after I dipped my face into the shallow end of the pool for 3 seconds while wearing the scuba equipment.

“Bad,” I said.

“Feel strangled?  That’s normal.”

“No,” I protested.  “I can’t breathe.”

“There’s plenty of air in the tank,” he insisted.  “Just relax.”

Once I finally realized the reason I couldn’t breathe was because I wasn’t sucking in air through the tube (which was wrong–not normal), the lesson went fine.
