#672: Visit Fire Island

17 Aug

Things you should know when visiting Fire Island:

  1. The trip from the subway to the Long Island Railroad, to switching LIRR trains, to the shuttle bus, to the ferry is as long as it sounds.
  2. The view from the top of a lighthouse is as cool as it sounds.
  3. Because there are no cars allowed on the island, you can either bike or walk to get where you need to go.
  4. If you choose to walk because bikes aren’t allowed during the weekends in certain parts, you will be walking along a singular trail, most of which is not paved but actually just like walking on the beach.
  5. There is nothing better than a big pitcher of water after walking 6 miles in the sand.
  6. Fire Island Lighthouse ale is a close second.
  7. Choosing between strawberry cheesecake and mint moose tracks ice cream is an almost impossible task.
  8. Picking the chocolate crumb cake from Rachel’s Bake Shop is practically an automatic decision.
  9. When it’s been an oddly cool summer, the water at the beach is going to be shockingly cold, even in August.
  10. The public restrooms at the beach close at 5pm.
  11. If you think you’re going to be able to eat dinner at a restaurant without making reservations or waiting an hour on a Saturday night, you’re crazy.
  12. The sunset is as spectacular as everyone says.
  13. The nightlife is as crazy as everyone says.
  14. The trip from the ferry to the shuttle bus, to the bar at the train station to wait for the next train in an hour, to the LIRR, to switching trains, to the subway, to Brooklyn for a birthday party is as long as it sounds.
  15. It’s totally worth it.
