I mean “get” as in: receive.
I signed up for a 6-week subscription because it was very cheap, and I felt a little guilty for claiming I hated it when the last time I’d tried to read it was during my very first job interview in New York, when they handed it to me to stay occupied in between meeting with different people. (The interview–for an entry-level position–lasted 6 hours.)
Plus, I sometimes like the things I read online from it.
Alas. “Get” does not mean “appreciate.”
I’m not sure if I’m too stupid to like this publication. I could just lack the patience to understand it. Maybe I just don’t have what it takes to enjoy The New Yorker.
After 10 years of being a New Yorker, I’m willing to consider all of those things. And I’m completely okay with the possibility that any one of them might be true.
