#887: Buy something from Hollister

It was an accident. And it was actually from TJ Maxx.

I didn’t realize the tiny shorts that most likely weren’t created for someone in their 30s were a name brand, and a silly teen brand at that. (I don’t really know what Hollister is except that when a store popped up in my hometown’s mall, I distinctly remember someone comparing it to Abercrombie and Fitch. By which I assumed you needed an extremely strong tolerance to pungent cologne to enter.)

All I knew was that they were comfortable, and these days, that’s most definitely a prerequisite for clothing I purchase. Read the rest of this entry »

#733: Go to an ugly sweater party

When these parties first started becoming popular, I felt bad for the ugly Christmas sweaters.  But now that they’ve become so ubiquitous entire companies have been created to supply people with their tree- and present- and Santa-covered clothes, I’m glad there’s a purpose for all of those unfortunate shirts.

#646: Buy TOMS

As I stood in line at Urban Outfitters to buy my severely discounted first pair of TOMS (which I didn’t feel guilty about since I know UO paid TOMS whatever its contract says, so a pair of shoes would still be going to someone in need regardless of how much I paid the store), I thought about how I was going to turn this blog post about the experience into a reflection on how lucky I am to be an American.

The 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays, after all (coming in only after Christmas and sometimes tying with Easter, depending on my current mood).  That’s because I live for the summer and enjoy possibly a little too much BBQs and pool parties.  But it’s also because I do love living in the US.

#566: Go commando in winter

Due to poor planning on my part (a run at an indoor track, with no extra pair of underwear for the ride home), I ended up wearing my work pants and nothing else under them.

#416: Buy something from Fashion Show

Fashion Show (remember Fashion Show?  Most people don’t, so don’t feel bad) seems to have found its correct demographic by airing on Friday evenings.  Much like Say Yes to the Dress draws in single women who dream about getting married but aren’t actually getting married anytime soon–which you can tell because they are sitting at home watching TV on a Friday night–Fashion Show draws in single women who are sitting at home watching TV on a Friday night, and, because they’ve chosen not to take out their troubles by eating ice cream (or their freezer is empty from all of the week’s previous troubles-taking-out), they instead spend their energy on something they can control: buying clothes that probably won’t fit them.

This post isn’t about that, though. Read the rest of this entry »

#323: Underwear handled by strangers

The main reason I do my own laundry isn’t because I don’t want strangers touching my underwear; that’s just a bonus.  I do my own laundry because it’s cheaper, and I’ve always equated sending out laundry with rich people (I understand you don’t have to be “rich” to take advantage of this service; it’s just how my mind views it).

Come to think of it, though, I don’t love the idea of strangers handling my underwear–or any of my clothes, really. Read the rest of this entry »

#296: Miss free underwear

If you’d have asked me a year ago whether I would ever be too busy to stop by Victoria’s Secret to pick up a pair of free underwear, I would have told you that was a ridiculous question.

I still can’t quite believe it happened.  I still don’t quite know how it happened.  I do know I’m busier than ever before in my life.  I know I have hardly any time to myself.  But so busy that I can’t make it to a store for a free gift, no purchase necessary?

In a way, it’s sad. Read the rest of this entry »
