#954: Drink JPOP

“It’s a little fatty,” the waitress said, pinching her side, after I ordered a Chinese dish called Beijing style dalumen.

“Uh…” I said. “Does that mean I shouldn’t get it? It’s not good?”

Or you’re warning me I may get fat if I eat it?

She looked at me blankly.

#953: Eat tempeh bacon

A coworker gave me a free lunch coupon from MealPal (which, by the way, is supposed to allow you to skip the line at restaurants and have your meal already waiting for you when you get there to pick it up–neither happened). So, I tried something out of my comfort zone.

Could tempeh bacon pass for real bacon? Read the rest of this entry »

#937: Scottadito Osteria Toscana

I’ve had this place in mind for at least 5 years (the gmail evidence only goes back to 2012, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I hadn’t read about it before then and neglected to write it down). It offers a reasonably-for-this-city priced brunch with drinks, and…actually, that’s all I knew about it.

#934: Drink red date tea

In my as yet unending quest to be able to sleep, I read about rooibos tea that apparently is helpful in falling to sleep.

The tea place around the corner doesn’t sell it, but they do sell red date tea, and in looking it up, I found it was also supposed to encourage restfulness. Whatever. Read the rest of this entry »

#922: Yo-Burger

According to many reviewers of this place in the Bronx, it’s a combination between Shake Shack and In-and-Out.

I can’t speak to its In-and-Outness, since the one and only time I’ve been to the California chain was about a decade ago, but Yo-Burger does resemble Shake Shack in its prices. Read the rest of this entry »

#918: Oliver’s

I do not blame myself. No, I don’t blame myself for missing any reviews online that may have mentioned the fact that Oliver’s employees a band that blasts–yes, blasts–soul music during brunch so loudly it’s impossible to have a conversation with your fellow diners sitting across from you at the table.

I do blame you. Read the rest of this entry »

#917: Underwest Donuts

I love festive celebrations, so I often take a trip to Sleepy Hollow during the fall. Last year, we tried to visit a restaurant I’d been to a couple years earlier, but it was so crowded we couldn’t even get on the list. This year, we decided to go at an in-between time to have a better chance.
