#940: Use a sun lamp

If you asked me to name one person who might benefit from light therapy to combatĀ Seasonal Affective Disorder, I would tell you to look no further than in front of you.

I’m not saying I technically have SAD. I probably don’t, if it’s in fact an actual type of depression. I am gloomy a whole lot, and negative even more often than that, but I don’t think I’ve ever experienced the total and utter long-term despair that seems to attack a person’s mind suffering from actual depression.

But I do feel terrible when the weather’s bad. Read the rest of this entry »

#932: Sensory deprivation

So much of life involves managing expectations.

I know it’s not supposed to be healthy to always expect the worst, but I have to think I wouldn’t have been as disappointed if I had expected these things about my sensory deprivation experience: Read the rest of this entry »

#926: Get a flu shot

I was going to get a flu shot last year. Every year before that, I thought, wait, there’s a chance I could get sick from the vaccination? Okay, nope. That’s not because I’m any sort of wimp but just because I know my immune system: lazy.

#924: Don’t do aqua boot camp

Technically, yes, I have done this before. Every other day of my life.

But last night, I was supposed to actually do aqua boot camp.

When I arrived at the rec center, some of the women informed me that they’d been told the instructor didn’t show up, so there would be aqua zumba again. Fine. I’d left work before the work was done (which is what I do every day these days) specifically to make it to aqua boot camp, but after the week this country’s had, I don’t think I had the grounds to feel too sorry for myself.

So I decided to stay for aqua zumba. Read the rest of this entry »

#921: Aqua Zumba

I’ve never even done regular Zumba, so what made me think I would be prepared for a water version in the middle of my second week at what is already the busiest, most exhausting job I’ve ever had, I don’t know.

Walking down the stairs to leave work, I decided I wouldn’t go. I was too tired. I was coming down with a cold. I needed to respect my body’s wishes and just go home and relax.

But then I realized that if I started down this slope, the steep one of only doing things when I felt like doing them, there was a very good chance I would never encounter a chairlift back up. Read the rest of this entry »

#903: Try PiYo

Considering I’ve taken a total of one yoga class and zero Pilates classes in my life, it should come as no surprise that I had no idea what a PiYo class would be like. Considering I’d never even heard of this cross between yoga and Pilates until 3 days ago, it should be obvious I had no clue what I was signing up for.

#897: Learn to meditate

It’s telling, perhaps, that I’ve been meaning to make the time and take the effort to learn to meditate for years.

The best part about the introductory class was that the instructor made sure to tell us we shouldn’t beat ourselves up over being bad at meditating–that is, having our thoughts wander from the specific thing we are supposed to be paying attention to. The worst part was my legs weren’t hanging right while sitting on the pillow and the room was hot. Okay, those are 2 worst things. I’m choosing to letĀ it go; you should, too.
