#884: Use Uber

Why I’ve never used Uber before is not complicated. When people first started talking about it, my smartphone hardly worked (thanks to Apple’s careful design of forcing customers to upgrade to newer models every few months) and I couldn’t download anything onto it. Then, once I got a functional smartphone (that has already become almost obsolete), I was always with someone who had Uber on their own phone when requiring it.

Now that I’ve experienced for myself the joy of being able to pay less than a third of what a taxi charges for the same ride between Disney World and the Orlando airport, I can whole-heartedly say I’m a fan. Read the rest of this entry »

#745: Boulton & Watt

The restaurant was having its 2-year anniversary party, promising certain $2 snacks and drinks for 2 hours between 7:30 and 9:30, so obviously I had to go.

Though when it was 9:20 and we were told they were no longer offering the drink specials because they ended at 9, I had to wonder if it was actually a 2-year birthday party. Two-year-olds can’t tell time. Read the rest of this entry »

#701: Twist and Smash’d

A-year-ago-me would have been very disappointed in me yesterday.  That’s because a-year-ago-me was dating someone preparing for the marathon, and he would often turn down food and drink if they weren’t healthy.  A-year-ago-me swore never to be like that, even if I ever prepared for a marathon, which a-year-ago-me didn’t think was a possibility anyway.

Yesterday, there was an open bar event at Twist and Smash’d (I don’t get the apostrophe either), and all I had was:

  • 4 mini soft pretzels
  • 2 mini empanadas
  • 1 mini spring roll
  • 4 chicken wings
  • 1 corndog
  • 2 sliders
  • 2 glasses of beer

#680: Have a 5 cent cocktail

They say every cloud has a silver lining.  I’d like the saying better if it were, “Every cloud has a burger lining.” Last night, it was.

The Owl’s Brew cocktail promotion at BFB where you get a token for a nickel that gets you a drink was a promising premise.  In practice, not so much. Read the rest of this entry »

#412: Don’t take full advantage of a deal

I thought this would be more difficult than it was.  Whenever there’s a deal, I take advantage of it.  If I bought 2 discount tickets to something and can’t find a friend to go with me, I will email someone I haven’t talked to in months to see if they’re available.  If I check in on Foursquare and it says I get a free gift, I will follow employees around the store until I get my free gift.  If my brunch deal says I get 3 drinks, I will drink those 3 drinks.

So yesterday, when the brunch deal indicated I could have up to 5 drinks, I intended to have all 5 drinks–not because I needed or even wanted 5 drinks within 2 hours, but because that’s what the deal included.  You could offer me a deal that comes with a free coffee and I’ll choose that one over the one that doesn’t come with anything extra, even though I don’t drink coffee.  You could tell me a deal I purchased includes a personal concert performed by mosquitoes rubbing their wings together, and I’ll hold out my arm to let the musicians land. #272: Don’t fight the split

I don’t know if it’s because I never had much growing up or because I try to save as much as possible now, but I’m careful with my money.  You can call it stingy or cheap, but it’s not, really.  It’s just always being aware of how much I’m spending, unlike the many people in this city who can go out and buy food and drinks all night without paying attention to how much money they’re parting with.

So when I’m with a group, I hate the split–you know, the time at the end of the meal when someone proposes to split the check evenly, and everyone goes along with it because it’s too awkward to say anything. Read the rest of this entry »

#265: Eat Joe’s Pizza

Joe, let me level with you.  I can see why you would think you could just hand me 2 slices of plain pizza for your $4 special price and expect me to be happy.  Normally when it comes to food, I choose quantity over quality.  And at that price, you’d think I’d just take my pizza and be satisfied.

But something you may not know is I’m subletting the place right above you, so I know your $4 “special” is the same price every single day. Read the rest of this entry »
