#927: Upstairs at Ryan’s Daughter

This bar is, at its core, a symbol of nostalgia for me.

It represents the time in my life when many of my friends lived in the same neighborhood. It plays the part of an old familiar watering hole that may not have really been that special but seems that way because of its reliability. Because it wasn’t as full of frat boys as the other bars. Because it always has free potato chips.

#811: La Palapa

This was going to be titled, “Turn down a free dessert,” but I can’t be certain I’ve never done that before.  There must have been times last year, when I was being very good about healthier eating, that I ignored a cookie on the table at work.

The reason we had a free dessert to turn down at La Palapa is because, once we were seated, we were ignored for about 10 minutes. When we finally asked for water and to order, we were then ignored for 5 more.  Then they brought water and dips for chips but no chips.  Little things, right? Read the rest of this entry »

#799: Drink a negroni

Ever since I read a piece about it online, years ago, I’ve wanted to try a negroni.

(I believe it was on The Awl, or a similar site, but the only thing that comes up when you google “negroni” and “awl” is this Negroni Season essay, and I can’t understand how that would have been the thing to inspire me to sample the drink.  In my memory, whatever I read was smooth and cool and romantic…but then, if you know me, you might think this piece is more suited for me than any of those words anyway, so.)

Because I thought of it as something casually elegant and subtly sophisticated, I was waiting for the perfect moment to drink a negroni. Read the rest of this entry »

#701: Twist and Smash’d

A-year-ago-me would have been very disappointed in me yesterday.  That’s because a-year-ago-me was dating someone preparing for the marathon, and he would often turn down food and drink if they weren’t healthy.  A-year-ago-me swore never to be like that, even if I ever prepared for a marathon, which a-year-ago-me didn’t think was a possibility anyway.

Yesterday, there was an open bar event at Twist and Smash’d (I don’t get the apostrophe either), and all I had was:

  • 4 mini soft pretzels
  • 2 mini empanadas
  • 1 mini spring roll
  • 4 chicken wings
  • 1 corndog
  • 2 sliders
  • 2 glasses of beer

#641: 169 Bar

At the risk of sounding like an alcoholic, I’m going to tell you this: it’s hard not to drink in the summer.

During the winter, or, as it seemed to be this year in New York, the never-ending deep freeze, people don’t go out as much.  They prefer to stay home cuddling (with their significant other, their pet, or, in my case, this one supremely cozy robe) or else when they do go out, they’ll tend to stick to one bar and then go home earlier just because it gets dark earlier and therefore seems later.

Now that the days are long and the weather is cooperating, my friends are going out more, and I’m on a kickball league, both of which are turning out to be a wrench in my eating healthier resolution that I still mostly try to stick to 6 months after making it.

#539: Reunion

I should be posting this review on yelp, but I forgot my password, as well as which email address I used to sign up, so it’s just easier to post it here.  The same 3 people will read it in either spot.

When I first sat down to wait for a friend at Reunion Surf Bar, I thought, “This doesn’t really seem like an Australian surf bar.”  I knew that because I’ve been to an Australian surf bar.  But on my way out, I noticed the sign that said, “We’re not Australian,” and later, I looked up more info. that told me the bar is based on a place off the coast of Africa.  It’s probably cruel to take away points simply because an establishment doesn’t resemble what it’s not trying to resemble.
