#811: La Palapa

This was going to be titled, “Turn down a free dessert,” but I can’t be certain I’ve never done that before.  There must have been times last year, when I was being very good about healthier eating, that I ignored a cookie on the table at work.

The reason we had a free dessert to turn down at La Palapa is because, once we were seated, we were ignored for about 10 minutes. When we finally asked for water and to order, we were then ignored for 5 more.  Then they brought water and dips for chips but no chips.  Little things, right? Read the rest of this entry »

#679: Try an egg cream

Drinking an egg cream in the borough where it was created (Brooklyn) is a cool thing.

Drinking a free egg cream because the people at Tom’s Restaurant felt bad we had to wait a while for our table and had to split up since we were 8 people in a tiny restaurant is a really cool thing.

#649: Be harassed

I’m not talking about typical, so commonplace we hardly notice it, harassment that comes as a result of being a woman in America (or on Earth, I guess–maybe on other planets they don’t have this problem).  I’m talking about a guy in Morocco who has been repeatedly emailing and calling me at work for months, trying to get me to send him free books.

Basically, what happened was that he wanted free books so he pretended to be a book reviewer, and I said I’d send him a few even though he seemed off because I wanted him to leave me alone.  But then he ignored every request I made to stop calling me daily to check on the books.  It was a little amusing, though annoying.  Then I found out he emailed my assistant as well and it stopped being funny. #296: Miss free underwear

If you’d have asked me a year ago whether I would ever be too busy to stop by Victoria’s Secret to pick up a pair of free underwear, I would have told you that was a ridiculous question.

I still can’t quite believe it happened.  I still don’t quite know how it happened.  I do know I’m busier than ever before in my life.  I know I have hardly any time to myself.  But so busy that I can’t make it to a store for a free gift, no purchase necessary?

In a way, it’s sad. Read the rest of this entry »

#267: Brooklyn Book Festival

See, this is something I never would have stumbled upon if I had an iPhone–or any sense of direction.  Because my friend was late to meet me somewhere in Brooklyn and I didn’t know where I was going since I didn’t have internet access, I just started walking, and found the festival.

#261: Get a subway swipe from a stranger

Not illegally, I promise (if that is even illegal; I know it’s frowned upon).  I was standing in line for tickets at Penn Station when a man asked the guy behind him whether he needed a MetroCard.

“I’m leaving town,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

#230: Ice skate outside in August

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for free things.  But the problem is, so is everyone else, and I am not a sucker for ridiculously long lines.  Sometimes you have to get creative.

You have to think: what free thing is going on during the workday so there will be a smaller crowd to start with, and what free thing going on during the workday will turn out to be such a poor excuse for what it’s being advertised as that the only people who will be doing it are tourists, desperate moms trying to entertain their children, or people writing blogs for which they try one new thing every day?

The answer: ice skating outside in August. Read the rest of this entry »
