#948: Swim before work

There is a school of thought–I’m not sure I subscribe to it–that says exercising in the morning is a good practice. It sets a precedent for your day and inspires you to make better choices throughout it.

While I’m skeptical about all of that, I have often thought about how nice it would be to swim before work. Since it’s the only thing I’ve yet to discover that clears my head and calms me down, creating this effect in the morning, before work pressures have stressed me out or exhausted me, seems to make sense.

#654: Swim laps in the rain

The only thing a lifeguard likes more than being paid to get a tan is being paid to not do anything because there’s been a lightning sighting.

So last night I felt sorry for the guards staring at the sky after the downpour, searching for a flash, straining for a rumble.  I knew how annoyed they were that so many people had actually shown up to swim laps when the forecast made it very clear there were dangerous storms in the vicinity.  I remembered how, back when I was a lifeguard, I vowed never to be one of these frustrating patrons who forced poor teenagers to sit outside and miserably peer through the rain at pathetic swimmers.

#221: Swim in McCarren Park Pool

Oh, McCarren Park Pool.  I have such a soft place in my heart for you.  Is it because you have been closed for almost 30 years and the very first summer you reopen, you’re plagued with repeated episodes of pool-closing fights, poop, and vomit?
