For some reason, when my company bought me an iPhone, I resented it a little. The reason was because I didn’t want to be on-call 24 hours a day. But it was also because I don’t like being forced to do anything.
So yesterday, when I gave in and bought my own iPhone now that I no longer have a work-provided one, it didn’t feel like I was succumbing to technology (and the robots). Because I was completely in charge of the decision, it felt fine.
It seems I am one of those people who, when presented with an idea she doesn’t like, needs simply to think she thought of it on her own and suddenly it will become acceptable. Of course that sounds silly, but wanting to feel like a person has agency in her own life doesn’t. Read the rest of this entry »
